Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters (SAFER)

SAFER gives you money each month to help pay rent if you are a BC senior aged 60 or older with a lower income. How much you get depends on your income, your rent, and a rent limit. The rent limit is $1,150 (starting April 2025). The smallest payment is $50 a month, and the average is about $337 a month. It is paid by direct deposit on the last working day of each month.

What you get

About $337/month

You cannot be living in subsidized housing, residential care, or a co-op where you are a shareholder, and you generally cannot be receiving income or disability assistance. Good to know

Income limit ($3,333.34/mo or ~$40,000/yr), single $1,150 rent ceiling, $50 minimum benefit, and ~$337 average subsidy all confirmed on BC Housing's SAFER page and the BC Gov News April 2025 release. Dollar figures change with program updates (improvements took effect April 1, 2025). Use BC Housing's RAP/SAFER calculator for an individual estimate. Older brochure rent ceilings ($700/$755/$975) are superseded by the single $1,150 ceiling.
