Canada-British Columbia Housing Benefit (CBCHB)
This program helps you pay rent in a regular apartment if you have a low income and do not qualify for BC's other rent help programs (RAP or SAFER). You do not apply on your own. BC Housing or a non-profit housing group picks people who qualify and offers it to them.
What you get
Monthly money toward your rent
Who it's for
You qualify if you have a low income and a vulnerable situation, and you do not qualify for RAP or SAFER.
This takes you to the official website
What to have ready
Documents they may ask for
- Government ID for everyone in your household, if available
- A copy of your lease or rent agreement
- Recent rent receipt, ledger, or proof of what you owe
- Recent pay stubs, benefit statement, or income proof
- ODSP, Ontario Works, CPP, OAS, or other benefit statement if you have one
- Recent bank statement, if the program asks for it
What to say when you call
“Hi, I found your housing support program and I want to check if I can apply. Can you tell me the current rules, documents needed, and the next step?”
Use the official page first, then call 211 if you are not sure where to start.
Can I get this?
You have a good chance if this sounds like you:
- You qualify if you have a low income and a vulnerable situation, and you do not qualify for RAP or SAFER
- You cannot apply yourself
- BC Housing picks people from The Housing Registry, and non-profit housing groups pick people they already serve
What to do next
Check off each step as you go — we'll remember where you are.

The fine print
The full eligibility rules
Vulnerable low-income households who do not qualify for RAP or SAFER. Recipients are selected, not self-applied: BC Housing selects eligible applicants from The Housing Registry, and non-profit housing providers select eligible applicants from the priority groups they serve.
Good to know
Confirmed on BC Housing's CBCHB page as referral/selection-based with no direct application ('BC Housing will select eligible applicants from The Housing Registry'). The overview page does NOT publish specific benefit dollar amounts or detailed income thresholds, so benefit_amount is left blank rather than guessed; detailed eligibility lives on the linked program-information and eligibility sub-pages. Removed the Program Framework PDF source_url because it could not be fetched/confirmed in this pass. The Supported Rent Supplement Program (SRSP) pairs CBCHB with wraparound supports for some recipients.
