Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) - Manitoba
EIA is Manitoba's main social assistance (welfare) program. It gives you money each month for basics like food and clothing if you are in financial need. Help with rent and utilities comes through a linked program called Rent Assist. There are three streams: General Assistance, Single Parents, and Persons with a Disability.

The fine print
More details about the money
Provides financial support for food, clothing, personal and household needs, basic dental, optical, prescription drugs, and health-related supplies/equipment, plus employment support services. Shelter and utility costs are covered through the Rent Assist program (see separate entry). Additional benefits apply to remote/northern Manitoba residents. The specific monthly basic allowance varies by family size and circumstances and is not published as a single flat figure on the overview page.
Amounts and eligibility change. Confirm the current figure with the program administrator through the official link before you rely on it.
The full eligibility rules
Must live in Manitoba and be in financial need, determined by comparing monthly basic-needs and housing costs against total income and assets. Family composition, ages, relationships and health needs factor into the benefit. Three categories: General Assistance (those without other support), Single Parents, and Persons with a Disability.
Good to know
Categories, coverage and application contacts read directly from gov.mb.ca. The shelter component is delivered via Rent Assist (separate entry). Per the source: beginning September 1, 2026 EIA pays only for emergency dental work as coverage transitions to the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Exact basic-allowance dollar rates are not stated on the overview page and vary by household; confirm with an EIA worker.
