Rent Bank Programs (Ontario, service-manager administered)

Rent banks across Ontario give emergency help, usually a no-interest loan or in some areas a grant, if you are behind on rent or need a deposit, so you do not get evicted. Each city runs its own, so the amount and rules differ. For example, Toronto offers a grant up to $5,000 for rent owed, and Windsor offers $822 to $2,266 a month depending on home size.

What to say when you call

Hi, I need help paying my rent and I may be behind. Can you tell me what emergency rent help is open, what documents I need, and the fastest way to apply?

Use the official page first, then call 211 if you are not sure where to start.

Can I get this?

You have a good chance if this sounds like you:

  • Rules are set locally
  • Many require that you have not used the rent bank recently

The fine print

More details about the money

Varies by local administrator. Examples (confirmed on official pages): Toronto Rent Bank grant up to $5,000 for arrears (now a grant, not a loan; not available to current OW/ODSP recipients); Windsor maximum monthly assistance $822 (bachelor) to $2,266 (4+ bedroom). Other municipalities differ.

Amounts and eligibility change. Confirm the current figure with the program administrator through the official link before you rely on it.

The full eligibility rules

Low-income tenants in short-term rent arrears or needing a first/last-month deposit, facing eviction or housing loss, who live in the area the rent bank serves. Specific income thresholds, arrears limits, and residency/tenure rules are set locally. Note: some programs (e.g. Toronto) require that you NOT currently receive Ontario Works or ODSP, while others (e.g. London, Windsor) are aimed at OW/ODSP recipients. Many programs require you not to have used the rent bank within a set prior period.

Good to know

Rent banks are a delivery model, not a single province-wide program. Current delivery is via local service managers funded under the Homelessness Prevention Program. CONFIRMED on official pages: Toronto is now a GRANT up to $5,000 and excludes current OW/ODSP recipients; Windsor monthly maximums $822-$2,266. Loan-vs-grant treatment and amounts change by city and annually. Always verify the specific local program before quoting figures to a tenant.
